CV Makeover Disasters: What NOT to Do

Hey there, junior crew! Ready to dive headfirst into the world of superyacht CVs that have a bit of, let's say, room for improvement?

Ever bumped into a CV that's like a puzzle with a few pieces missing? Some CVs look like they've been on a wild rollercoaster ride – with formatting all over the place, spelling that's doing its own thing, and oh, the selfies!

But hey, no worries at all! If you're nodding your head thinking, "Yep, that's me," I've got your back. Let's straighten things out and give those CVs the glow-up they deserve.

So grab a cuppa or your favourite snack, 'cause we're about to have a chat that'll help you level up your CV game.

1. Alright, first things first – let's chat about the power of first impressions. Your CV isn't just some piece of paper; it's your debut on the yacht scene. So, let's aim for that clean, fresh, and sharp look that makes people think, "Whoa, this is the person we need onboard."

2. Now, growing up near the sea DOES NOT automatically makes you the ultimate yacht expert. PLEASE don't write that on your CV.  Having a coastline view at home and going to the beach on holiday since you were a kid doesn't mean you'd be perfect for yachting. Junior crew, your CV should be a showcase of real skills and experience, not a geography lesson.

3. Let's talk about the phrase "Passionate About Yachting." Brace yourself for this one. I've seen CVs where people who've never even looked at a boat claim they've been passionately in love with yachting since day one. Honestly, it's like saying you're a top chef because you can work a microwave. Instead, let's keep it real – talk about what you're ACTUALLY passionate about, 'cause that's what catches attention and is a brilliant talking point.

4. Let's give those unprofessional CV photos a little makeover of their own! Say goodbye to pouty selfies - you're not Kim K. Let's go for a more polished look. Think polo shirt, neat hair, and a genuine smile. While a backdrop with water or boats is great, it's not a must. A clean, professional look is what we're after, whether it's a plain wall or a sunny day in the park. Whatever you have access to it great!

5. Now, let's break free from boring. Your CV is your time to shine. Imagine you're on a stage, and the spotlight's on YOU. Instead of blending into the background, let's give your CV some LIFE! Show off your skills, flaunt your accomplishments, and sprinkle in your personality. When that CV lands on their desk, it should make them go, "Whoa, we gotta have this person!"

So, here's the tea on what to do instead...

1. Showcase YOU:
Your CV should beam with your personality and skills, not look like a plain copy-paste job. Don't just list your tasks – share why you're amazing, how have you gone above and beyond, why should someone hire YOU specifically? But keep it SHORT and to the point.

2. Sell Yourself:
Imagine your CV as a pitch for your talents. If you're not convinced of your own awesomeness, no one else will be either. Use confident language to talk about your achievements. Instead of the same old "great team player" line, add a sentence into your profile about HOW you're a great team player with an example.

3. Escape Boredom:
Look at your CV and ask "does this look nice?" "Would I hire me?" - If your CV makes you yawn, it's time for a makeover. Make it as engaging as you can. What makes you excited to be part of the crew? What can you bring to the team that's different than everyone else? Don't shy away from letting your personality shine through.

And now, the golden nuggets of expert advice to transform your CV into a "holy smokes, we need this person!" masterpiece.

1. The Gut Check:
Give your CV a good read and ask yourself, "Would I hire me?" If not, time to spruce things up. Imagine you're the recruiter scanning through a mountain of CVs. Yours needs to stand out, scream "pick me!" and leave them eager to learn more.

2. Uniqueness Wins:
Toss aside those worn-out phrases like "hardworking team player." It's your moment to show what sets you apart in the yachting world. You're not just another face in the crowd; you're the secret ingredient that makes the crew extraordinary.

So, remember, your CV isn't just a document; it's your ticket to your dream job! Make it a reflection of your true self, with a dash of pizzazz and a sprinkle of confidence. You've got this, junior crew!

Love, Georgia
